Ultrasonic Testing (UT), similar to sonar technology, is performed using a transducerto propagate pulse-echo sound waves into materials to detect internal flaws or to characterize materials.
An ultrasonic probe is passed over the surface of a test piece with the aid of gel or couplant, emitting waves and receiving reflections, which are then displayed via a diagnostic machine and interpreted by a certified inspector. Phased-array UT is a more advanced ultrasonic testing method that produces higher quality images by utilizing variably controlled transducers; this allows for easier interpretation of defectsby an inspector.
