Ultrasonic Testing

Ultrasonic Testing (UT), similar to sonar technology, is performed using a transducer
to propagate pulse-echo sound waves into materials to detect internal flaws or to characterize materials.

An ultrasonic probe is passed over the surface of a test piece with the aid of gel or couplant, emitting waves and receiving reflections, which are then displayed via a diagnostic machine and interpreted by a certified inspector. Phased-array UT is a more advanced ultrasonic testing method that produces higher quality images by utilizing variably controlled transducers; this allows for easier interpretation of defects
by an inspector.

QC Labs performed an Ultrasonic Inspection (UT) on moment weld connections in accordance with AWS D1.1 at a major port terminal. All welded connections were found to be satisfactory according to D1.1.
